Over 7000 Mimbres bowls are now in museums and private collections.

The Mimbres bowl used as the model for this sterling silver miniature is at the

Arizona State Museum, University of AZ, Tucson.  We call this geometric design the Wave.

At first glance, this design looks like another geometric,

but look again (and again?) and you see a stylized drawing of two mountain sheep.  The bowl  is in the University of New Mexico's collection and is on display at the Maxwell Museum in Albuquerque.

is based on this bowl.


Jack rabbits are pictured on many Mimbres bowls,
and they are still a common site in the American southwest.  This particular design is on a bowl found at the Swartz ruin in New Mexico.

The spectacular design was painted free hand on the inside of the bowl, some 1000 years ago, with brushes made from the leaves of yucca plants.
